Sturtevant, family: Pulling for UConn

D.J. STURTEVANT

SCHOOL: University of Connecticut

AGE: 35

FAMILY: Wife, Barbara (2002 UConn grad); son, Alex (4)

CURRENT RESIDENCE: Bradford

OCCUPATION: 5th grade teacher in North Andover

YEAR GRADUATED: 2001 (2002 Masters)

MAJOR: Elementary education

WHY DID YOU ATTEND UCONN?: “It was the education program. It was the only one around that had a five-year program, called an integrated bachelor’s masters (IBM).”

WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE THERE?: “First off, for me, I met my wife (Barbara) there. I was a sophomore and she was a freshman when we met. We ended up having a few classes together the first year or so and we hit it off. ... As for the school, it is a tremendous place. I grew up in North Andover where everyone knew who I was because the town is so small. It’s different at UConn. I met so many new people. There were a lot of activities, academic challenges; the complete academic experience. The school had everything, clubs, intramurals, etc. The university was a town. You don’t have to leave. There are 20,000 students there but the campus still felt small.”

DID YOU ATTEND BASKETBALL GAMES?: “Yes. I had season tickets every year I was there. It was tremendous. We would camp out in the cold in January and February for big games and the players and coaches would come out and serve cocoa and snacks. It was awesome. I don’t know how many Top 25 teams I saw, many of whom played in the NBA. It really was a great experience.”

A FAVORITE HOOP-RELATED MEMORY AT UCONN: “It had to be when we won championship in 1999 when we beat Duke. The campus exploded ... in a positive way. I still have the recording of my friend who called the game on the radio. I still listen to it from time to time. I remember the buzz on campus that whole day of the game, walking from the dining hall to the dorm and how quiet it was. Then when we won it was a big party. They closed the streets so things wouldn’t get out of hand. I don’t think any of us slept that night. We went to classes walking in a daze. I remember thinking, ‘Did that really happen.?’”
