Koenigs paces Andover to third

Central Catholic settles for sixth

IPSWICH — Andover continued its fine late-season play yesterday by finishing third in the Division 1 state golf tournament at Turner Hill Country Club.

Shrewsbury finished first with 318, one shot ahead of Needham and four better than the Golden Warriors. Central Catholic finished sixth with a 334 score.

Junior Janek Koenigs paced the Golden Warriors with a superb 75 and classmate Donald Hunt backed him up with an 80 on the par-72 course. David Gilbert came in with an 83, one shot better than Mike Levenson, while Evan DiBiase and Adam Rozenweig both came in with 86s.

"Janek played phenomenally — very consistent all day, mostly pars with two birdies — and that was a very good round for Donald Hunt," said Andover coach Mike Pratt.

Overall, however, Pratt and the Warriors were mildly disappointed that they didn't capture the overall title.

"We played a lot better last week and we had a practice round here yesterday and our scores were much better," said Pratt. "But the conditions (cold and windy) were tough today and a lot of people had trouble."

Central Catholic was paced by Joe Leavitt, who carded an 80, while Dylan Ryan checked in with an 84.

Reflective of the tough conditions, only six golfers cracked 80 in the individual tournament. St. John's Prep senior Nick McLaughlin of New Castle, N.H., was the runaway medalist with a par-72, six strokes ahead of runner-up Nick Erlickman of Shrewsbury.

McLaughlin was a model of consistency with a 37-35 while becoming just the third individual to win the state title in the rich history of St. John's Prep golf.

Koenigs actually had the second lowest score of the day, but he did not qualify for the individual tournament out of the sectional.
