NORTH ANDOVER — Sophomore Michelle Martin, who is in her first year both playing and starting on North Andover's varsity field hockey team, struck for two quick goals yesterday.
She gave her team an early lead by scoring 49 seconds into the contest. She later helped her team gain a two-goal cushion by scoring less than 3 minutes into the second half.
"We realized we needed to keep scoring to win," she said about her second goal.
Martin scored twice. Meanwhile, the Moen sisters also played well. Senior Alexandra Moen scored a goal and recorded three assists and junior Gabrielle Moen had one goal to help lead No. 4 North Andover to a 5-1 victory over No. 13 Methuen in the first round of the Division 1 North tournament.
Martin, who has been playing ice hockey since the fifth grade for a club team, has nine goals this year. She starts at forward and Gabrielle Moen rotates in for her.
"She's young and she's great," coach Courtney Breen said about Martin. "She really works well with (everyone) up front. She's fun to watch. She was one I thought would be a big player on our team."
North Andover (16-1-3) advanced to play Brookline in the quarterfinal round at noon Sunday at home.
North Andover was eliminated in the semifinals last year when it lost to Andover 2-1 in overtime.
"We're going to win it," a confident Gabrielle Moen said. "We're going all the way."
Gabrielle Moen scored about five seconds after rotating in for Martin with 21:05 left in the second half. She sprinted down the left side and scored after receiving a pass from her sister.
"It was adrenaline," she said. "My sister passed it to me and I got it in. We're blood."
Candace Waldie scored the Scarlet Knights' other goal. She also added an assist.
"It was heartbreaking (last year) but we're ready to come back and win it all this year," Alexandra Moen said. "I don't think we have any weaknesses right now. We just have to come out strong."
Methuen ended the season 10-7-2. It was eliminated in the first round for the second straight year.
"Once we get to playing on a turf field, it's a totally different game," Methuen coach Karen McLaughlin said.. "It's a passing game and it's not like that when you play it on the grass. But North Andover is a very good team. ... They definitely have athletes. They looked like a college team out here when we first got here."
