Syracuse takes down UNC

Brandon Triche and Arinze Onuaku combined for 13 points in Syracuse's 22-1 run to open the second half and the Orange went on to a 87-71 victory over No. 6 North Carolina in the 2K Sports Classic championship.

The Orange (4-0) were the only unranked team in the semifinals of the tournament that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer but they left Madison Square Garden with blowout wins over No. 13 California and the Tar Heels (4-1).

Tournament MVP Wesley Johnson had 25 points for the Orange, who beat California 95-73 in the semifinals. Onuaku finished with 15 points and Triche had 11.

College basketball: No. 25 Maryland breezes past New Hampshire

Landon Milbourne scored a career-high 24 points, and No. 25 Maryland cruised past New Hampshire 82-55 in the Terrapins' final tuneup for the Maui Invitational.

Sophomore guard Sean Mosley had 13 points and a career-best 10 assists for his first career double-double, and Eric Hayes scored 15 points for Maryland (3-0). After three straight blowouts at home, the Terrapins will head to Hawaii to play three games in three days, beginning Tuesday.

Pro football: Death of Brees' mother ruled a suicide

The death of the mother of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been ruled a suicide.

Mina Brees, an attorney from Austin, Texas, died Aug. 7 while visiting Colorado. Grand County coroner Brenda Bock concluded this week that the 59-year-old Brees died of a prescription drug overdose and ruled the death a suicide.

Bock said Brees died while staying at the home of a friend in Granby near Rocky Mountain National Park.

It took longer than three months for autopsy results to be released, but Bock said that's typical for cases involving toxicology tests.

More pro football: Giants LB Pierce out indefinitely with neck injury

New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce is out indefinitely after an MRI exam surprisingly revealed a bulging disk in his neck.

The Giants said their defensive captain underwent the test in New York and was examined by team physician Dr. Russell Warren and Dr. Frank Camissa, chief of the spinal surgical services at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Pro baseball: Nationals top pick Strasburg won't need surgery

The Nationals say No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg has a dislocation in his left knee joint and should be fine for spring training. Strasburg was examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. The Nationals say Strasburg will not require surgery, and that treatment will include rest and physical therapy.

The San Diego State right-hander twisted his knee during a workout Thursday and has been scratched from his start in the Arizona Fall League championship game.

A 20-DVD set of World Series films can be bought for $2,299, and it contains authenticated autographs of 12 Hall of Famers, including Yogi Berra, Bob Gibson, Reggie Jackson and Mike Schmidt.

A limited edition run of 100 sets was put together by Major League Baseball Productions, A&E Home Entertainment and Mounted Memories.

Pro basketball: McGrady wants to play, Rockets say no

Tracy McGrady says he is ready to play. The Houston Rockets say he'll have to wait. The seven-time All-Star had microfracture surgery on his left knee in February, but believes he's good enough to get back on the court. Houston coach Rick Adelman says it's too soon for McGrady to return, admitting there's a difference of opinion.

More pro basketball: Bogut out 2 to 4 weeks with leg injury

Bucks center Andrew Bogut will be out two to four weeks after the former No. 1 pick was kicked in the left leg in a recent win. Bogut said before Milwaukee played Charlotte that he had hoped he just had a charlie horse bruise after he left a 99-85 victory over New Jersey on Wednesday.

Bogut stayed in the game for several minutes after he was kicked, but the pain grew worse and an MRI taken Thursday revealed that he had strained a ligament on the outside of his left calf to go along with a bruise. ... Devin Harris is expected to play today, a sorely needed boost for the winless New Jersey Nets.

A team spokesman says Harris will come off the bench when the Nets (0-12) host the New York Knicks today.

College football: Man pleads not guilty for role in UConn case

A man who allegedly was with the man charged with killing University of Connecticut football Jasper Howard, has pleaded not guilty to a conspiracy charge.

Twenty-year-old Hakim Muhammad entered the plea in Rockville Superior Court on a charge of conspiracy to commit assault. Prosecutors say Muhammad, of Bloomfield, Conn., and his friend and co-worker, 21-year-old John William Lomax III, were involved in a minor altercation with others outside a university sanctioned dance early Oct. 18. The suspects allegedly went back to Lomax's car and returned with knives.

Women's college basketball: No. 1 UConn just keeps on rolling

Maya Moore scored 21 points, Tina Charles added 18 and top-ranked Connecticut coasted to its 42nd straight victory, beating Holy Cross 87-34. It was the 117th win against unranked nonconference opponents for the Huskies (3-0), who have won their first three games by an average margin of 49.3 points after going undefeated last season.

Pro soccer: Beckham has bone bruise but expects to play

Los Angeles midfielder David Beckham said he'll need an injection in his right ankle to reduce pain and allow him to play in tomorrow night's MLS Cup final against Real Salt Lake. Beckham has a bone bruise in his ankle that's been bothering him for some time. He said after Los Angeles finished training at Qwest Field that the combo of the injury and the artificial surface at the stadium won't keep him from playing for his first title since joining the Galaxy.

Names: Bond increased for man accused of taping reporter Andrews

A judge has increased bond to $100,000 for an Illinois insurance executive accused of secretly making nude videos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews. Michael Barrett was in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles to face one count of interstate stalking. Barrett's attorney David Willingham says his client has posted bond. Barrett was initially free on a $4,500 bond. The 48-year-old Barrett is charged with making videos of Andrews through the peephole in her hotel room door, and federal prosecutors say he uploaded to the Internet nude videos of other women also made through peepholes.
