Scarlet Knight quarterback John Gaffny suffered a broken rib on the first series of the game but played until halftime. ... Despite fielding only 17 players, 3-7 Georgetown upset 6-2 Manchester, 3-0 on P.J. Lynah's 23-yard field goal, his first and only attempt of the season. After the game, meetings were held to determine whether the undermanned Georgetown program will continue. ... Ed Janvrin passed and ran for a score to lead Whittier to a 34-0 decision over Tyngsboro. ... Sanborn's Alan Magnusson was named Class I boys soccer Coach of the Year. ... Marc Spencer, Bill Drohen, Kevin Murphy and Keith Cutler represented unbeaten Haverhill on the All-MVC golf team. ... After Northern Essex broke out to a six-point halftime lead, N.H. Vo-Tech College forfeited the game, choosing not to continue after discovering its locker room was broken into during the first half with money, IDs, clothes and a half-used bar of deodorant being stolen. Sophomore quarterback Randy Hart and receiver Ray Preston connected for three TDs and Hart threw for 265 yards in a romp over Central Catholic. But Paul St. Onge was a force with 75 yards rushing and three touchdowns as Haverhill later whipped the Lancers. Dennis Godfrey added a 40-yard point-after kick set up by Haverhill penalties. ... Bruce Thompson scored Salem's touchdown in a 16-6 loss to Winnacunnet. ... Gerry Williams (2 TD passes, TD run) got Georgetown back to the .500 mark, defeating Manchester, 24-14 in a game played in Kingston, N.H. ... Sanborn was expected to continue competing in football. Twenty-five of its 35 enrolled boys participated last season. ... Tommy Peterson (44 points on 19-of-26 shooting) and Northern Essex clobbered Emerson, 128-72 at Haverhill High.

Former Haverhill High star Mark Comeau added to his 1,000-plus yard rushing totals as his 87-yard, two-touchdown effort led Cardinal Cushing Academy of West Newbury to a 25-6 victory over Berwick (Maine) Academy back in November 1969. CC improved to 7-0.
Despite losing a leg after being hit by a car the summer before, Kevin Alsup entered the game as a reserve lineman for the Cardinals and plans to participate in track in the spring.
A computer malfunction threatens to keep Cardinal Cushing from playing in the national prep school Super Bowl game in Miami as its daunting statistics couldn't be entered for analysis against other squads.
