Reddy paces Rangers to second at All-State

Rangers fall four points shy of champion Mansfield

NORTHFIELD — Jared Reddy and several of his Methuen teammates were in peak form yesterday at the Division 1 All-State meet at Northfield Mountain.

But, because the Rangers' fifth man was a bit too far back, Methuen had to settle for second, just four points behind defending champion Mansfield. Lowell, missing its No. 2 runner because of the swine flu, was fourth and St. John's Prep took fifth. North Andover finished 12th.

That marks the highest team finish ever for the Rangers, but head coach Bill James and the rest of the team were a bit disappointed.

"Our first four put us right where we wanted to be — they were great — but we just couldn't get our fifth man up higher," said James. "It's a great accomplishment, but it's too bad, because we thought we had a good chance at winning."

Reddy, who was near the front the entire race, finished in third with an excellent 16:11.8 on the hilly 3.1-mile course, as the highest-ever Methuen All-State individual, according to the Ranger coaches.

Senior teammate Andrew Stamatopulos made up several places in the last mile, running 17:02.6 for 22nd. Tyler Sullivan was 37th and Ben Pare was 43rd. But there was a gap of 58 places to the next Methuen scorer.

"Jared was terrific — he really gutted it out and Andrew also had a super race."

Familiarity with the course was a plus for Reddy. He ran at Northfield as a freshman and, to get ready for the hills yesterday, the team traveled to Northfield to train four times during the last two months.

Patrick McGowan of Mansfield finished first in 16:05.4 and Arlington senior Anthony Taylor, who played soccer until this year, was second in 16:10.4, just in front of Reddy.

"I wanted to be in at least the top five," said Reddy, who was in second place at the 2-mile mark. "I got to the top of the first hill and felt good, so I picked up the pace.

"It definitely helped to have run here before, and I felt good the whole race. I know this is a good group of individuals, so I feel proud of myself."

North Andover was paced by Darryl Varney, who was 11th in 16:43.7 to earn All-State status. Senior classmate Max O'Brien placed 34th.

Individually, Andover's Simon Voorhees was 41st in 17:21.9 while, in Division 2, Whittier Tech junior Bryan Stanley came in 12th in 17:04.3.

Haverhill girls finish sixth

Injuries depleted the Haverhill girls team throughout the season, but the Hillies continued to stand strong.

Yesterday, fueled by Julie Solimine's fourth-place finish, the Hillies came in sixth in the Division 1 girls All-State meet. Solimine finished sixth in last week's Division 1 Eastern Mass. meet and was eighth in last year's All-State.

Jillian Meserve was next for the Hillies, in 44th, and Beth Fullerton was 68th.

Running as an individual, Central Catholic's Kelsey Kowal came in 35th.

In the Division 2 All-State meet, Pentucket's Alanna Poretta started strong and showed a fine finishing kick to take top honors in 19:08.8.
