NORTHBOROUGH — Central Catholic senior setter Carolyn Eddy stood at the service line here Saturday night needing to ignite a rally in game No. 2.
Eddy did just that, using her impressive jump-serve to put Central up 5-0.
"I had to serve it to a special area because I didn't want their libero (defensive specialist) to pass the ball because she's obviously going to give a perfect pass," Eddy said. "I just had to place it."
Central lost the Division 1 title game 3-1 to New Bedford, but Eddy shined in her final high school game.
And she also had some fun despite losing.
"I definitely enjoyed myself," she said. "We all had fun. For the seniors, this is our last game and we made the most of it. I feel like I played as good as I could. I did as much as I could and my teammates did the same thing."
The MVC Division 1 MVP, who entered the title match with 495 assists and 76 aces in 22 matches, recorded 32 assists, 19 service points, two aces and two blocks against the unbeaten Whalers. She also prolonged two rallies by making terrific saves with her fist.
Tough call
Central coach Gannon Paris questioned a call by the referees late in the third game.
"At the moment, we were ahead and the point would've kind of made it difficult for them to come back," Paris said. "It was a situation where the ball was coming to them and the player contacts it and kind of redirects it, possesses the ball, and then shoots it in a different direction. Any possession of the ball is a lift or a carry.
"It wasn't called. So she was able to control the ball, hold it, and move it to a different direction. If we get that point — one more point — we're looking at a completely different night."
The Raiders couldn't hold onto 23-20 leads in Games 3 and 4.
Senior power
The other three senior starters in addition to Eddy also posted strong numbers.
Hillman had 20 service points and five kills.
Katie Zenevitch recorded eight kills.
Lindsay Phenix added 19 service points and three blocks.
"It was a good way to go out for all of them, even the girls who didn't play," Paris said. "It's progress because we were closer on the last night of the year (than in last year's title game loss)."
