CAMBRIDGE — Maggie D'Innocenzo sure seems like the real deal.
The sister of former Andover boys star Nick D'Innocenzo, who is a freshman swimmer at the University of Texas, took first place in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-freestyle at the Division 1 state meet yesterday.
Her effort helped Andover win the team state title.
"Honestly, I came in thinking I was not going to win anything," said D'Innocenzo. "I definitely had butterflies in my stomach — more than usual."
Maggie D'Innocenzo attended most every high school meet that her brother and her sister — Andover senior Katie D'Innocenzo, who placed 10th in 100 butterfly yesterday — have ever competed in.
So this was not Maggie's first trip to the state meet. She has seen a number of teams compete at this level and, because of that, she understands the great talent of Andover's underclassmen, who combined for 13 top-six individual finishes.
"I was always just waiting until the day I could do high school swimming," she said about watching her brother and sister. "So to see this freshmen class we have, I know it's really big for high school.
"We definitely have a lot of depth. That's the key thing in high school. Y
"You're always going to have a few good swimmers on your team, but it's the depth you need."
Katie D'Innocenzo was impressed with her sister.
"Maggie has always had a real passion for it," she said. "She always wants to do it 110 percent."
Katie joked about how she and her sister first got into swimming.
"We all started because Nick swam," she said. "It was either swim or sit in the hot bleachers."
Their brother Nick was sitting in the hot bleachers yesterday. He was home from Texas for Thanksgiving.
"I'm really proud of both my sisters," he said. "Both of them swam awesome. I'm especially proud of Katie. Maggie is a firecracker. She's always had so much energy. And she's always been so fast. To see her do what she did is incredible.
"But I'm really proud of Katie, too. This is a lot longer coming for her. This is a really big deal for her to be able to score points for her team at states so I'm really proud of her for that."
Freshman twins excel
Freshman twins Ashlee and Alexa Korsberg certainly swam well.
Alexa placed second in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 200 freestyle. Ashlee took third in both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
"When we were really little a whole group of us — some of who were swimming today — we were sitting in the stands watching (our siblings at state) so it's just really fun to finally be on the team and swimming," said Alexa.
Ashlee and Alexa are the younger sisters of Kristi Korsberg who is a sophomore swimmer at Harvard and was in the stands watching her two little sisters.
"It was always so exciting to watch her swim at all the state meets and all the big high school meets," said Ashlee.
Running, then swimming
Many of the Andover swimmers are members of the Magnus Aquatic Group, which ran in the Feaster Five Road Race on Thanksgiving.
Yes, two days before the state meet at least nine Andover swimmers ran a five-mile race.
Andover coach Marilyn Fitzgerald said that her house is at mile No. 3 of the race.
"I live on Washington Ave. so they all went down Washington Ave. and I had the Andover swim and dive sign hanging on my house," said Fitzgerald. "And I was out there with chairs and I had a whole group of people cheering them on.
"Normally, it would have not happened this way because the (state) meet is not after Thanksgiving like this, so I did have some concern about their legs obviously, but they did fine."
Rachel Moore, who set one state meet record and tied another, was one of those who ran in the race Thursday.
Maggie D'Innocenzo also ran it.
"I was so sore," said Moore. "Right now my legs are killing me but you've got to just forget about it."
D'Innocenzo added: "My legs were a little sore but after swimming in warmup I felt good."
