Merrimack wins first conference game

Sophomore Roland Davis netted 17 points, including converting 3-of-6 3-pointers, to help Merrimack win its Northeast-10 Conference game this season.

Three other Merrimack players reached double-digits in scoring as the Warriors beat previously-unbeaten UMass-Lowell 71-56 in front of 639 people at the Volpe yesterday.

Merrimack (2-3, 1-2) had lost its first two conference games to Bentley, then Stonehill.

"We played a solid game on the defensive end, which allowed us to get off to a fast start," said Bert Hammel in a release. "We certainly need to improve our rebounding effort, but I'm pleased with our defense on the whole."

The Warriors were out-rebounded 54-39.

They did outscore UMass-Lowell 46-38 in the second half. It marks the first time in the first five games that Merrimack was able to score more second-half points than its opponent.

The Warriors had extremely ugly second halves against both Bentley and Stonehill, being outscored by a combined 24 points by both those teams after the break.

UMass-Lowell cut a seven-point halftime deficit down to three with 17:48 left. But Merrimack never let the River Hawks get any closer than that.

Darren Duncan scored 13 points and added nine assists. Aaron Strothers and Wayne Mack each added 12 points.

Merrimack, which shot 42.4 percent from the floor, won in overtime over UMass-Lowell in last year's NCAA East Regional tournament.

The Warriors play Franklin Pierce at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at home.

Women lose

The women's team lost 78-66 to UMass-Lowell to remain winless in conference play.

Senior Casey Miller netted 21 points, but Merrimack surrendered a late lead.

The Warriors (1-5, 0-3) led 58-49 with 6:24 left.

But UMass-Lowell went on a 16-0 run to grab a 65-58 lead with 2:35 left.

The River Hawks outscored Merrimack 29-6 in the final 6:07 of the game.

The Warriors play Franklin Pierce at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at home.
