Phils have tentative deal for Halladay

The Phillies have a tentative agreement to acquire star pitcher Roy Halladay in a trade with Toronto, and the former Cy Young Award winner was in Philadelphia for a physical required to complete the deal.

Philadelphia also is discussing a trade that would send Cliff Lee, another former Cy Young winner, to the Seattle Mariners.

The commissioner's office granted a 72-hour window on Sunday for Toronto and Philadelphia to complete their trade, a baseball official familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because Major League Baseball didn't make any announcement.

Halladay took a physical for the NL champion Phillies, another person with knowledge of the situation said, also on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made.

Philadelphia could give up pitchers J.A. Happ, Joe Blanton and outfielder Dominic Brown as part of a deal, the person said. Those three players also took physicals in Philadelphia.

Pro baseball: Matsui, Angels reach preliminary deal

Hideki Matsui is headed west.

The World Series MVP and the Los Angeles Angels have reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year contract worth about $6.5 million, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

"I can confirm that we are in serious discussions with the Angels," Matsui's agent, Arn Tellem, wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Tellem declined further comment.

Matsui surpassed 100 RBIs four times in seven seasons with the Yankees after coming over from Japan, where he was an enormous star. He just completed a $52 million, four-year contract with New York.

Pro baseball: Brewers finalize Wolf, agree with Counsell

Randy Wolf understood when Houston pulled a $27 million, three-year offer before last season because of the faltering economy. In the meantime, he made his first postseason appearance and parlayed it into an even bigger contract from the Brewers.

"If I were there, I wouldn't have the opportunity to sign here," Wolf said of his rocky offseason last year. "I think things have a way of ending up in the right way."

The 33-year-old left-hander finalized his $29.75 million, three-year contract with Milwaukee, which also re-signed Craig Counsell to a $2.1 million.

More pro baseball: Selig plans on-field study group

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig plans to establish a study group that will examine on-field issues that could include replay, umpires and pace of game.

Selig scheduled a telephone news conference for today for an announcement involving on-field matters but the commissioner's office did not go into specifics.

Selig's decision to look at how baseball is approaching on-field issues was disclosed to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to get ahead of Selig's announcement.

Pro football: Jets' Sanchez to practice, status uncertain

Injured Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will practice this week, although coach Rex Ryan is uncertain what the rookie's status will be for New York's next game against Atlanta.

Ryan said he wants to see how Sanchez and his sprained right knee get through Wednesday's practice before making a decision on who the starter will be Sunday at the Meadowlands.

"It may take a couple of days to figure this out," Ryan said. "You know me, I'm not a guy who's going to string it along and have no decision and not say anything about it. Clearly, if Mark is going to be playing, I want him to get the majority of the snaps, just like I would if Kellen (Clemens) is going to be playing."

More pro football: Dawson to be part of trophy presentation

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson will carry the Lombardi Trophy at the Super Bowl again.

The NFL said it will salute Dawson by having him carry the Vince Lombardi Trophy to midfield and hand it off to commissioner Roger Goodell for the trophy presentation following the Super Bowl. The game is Feb. 7 at Land Shark Stadium in South Florida.

Dawson was the MVP of the 1970 Super Bowl after leading the Chiefs to a 23-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings in New Orleans.

Pro basketball: Ariza suspended for swinging at Raptors player

Houston Rockets forward Trevor Ariza was suspended for one game by the NBA after he was ejected from a game in Toronto for throwing a forearm at Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan.

He'll sit out tonight's game against Detroit.

The 6-foot-8 Ariza is Houston's second-leading scorer, averaging 17 points. He's started the Rockets' first 23 games and leads the team in minutes (38.7 per game).

He went 0 for 9 from the field and scored only one point before he was ejected in the third quarter of Sunday's game for swinging his arm at DeRozan's head following a steal.

College football: South Florida coach struck one of his players

The University of South Florida plans to look into a report that football coach Jim Leavitt struck one of his players in the face during halftime of a game last month.

Citing the player's father, high school coach and five USF players who were not identified, AOL FanHouse reported that Leavitt grabbed Joel Miller by the throat and hit him in the face twice because he was upset about a mistake the sophomore walk-on made on special teams.

FanHouse said the incident occurred at halftime of the Bulls' game against Louisville on Nov. 21.

After planning to take the whole year off, Walsh returned to the AVP tour in August.
