PLAISTOW, N.H. — The names change, but the results remain the same.
That was evident last night as unbeaten and two-time defending New England champion Owls (5-0) romped past a Londonderry team, 73-3, which was coming off a championship title last weekend at the Bronco Invitational.
While talented veterans like Zach Bridson, Alex Smith and the Lawrence brothers, Nick and Nate, coasted to victories, it was less familiar names like freshman Josh Burnham, sophomore Luke Morrier and junior Tyler Paolini who raised eyebrows.
Burnham, already winning 13-6, pounced on a mistake by Tyler Wilson, to record a third-period pin at 125, Morrier pinned Londonderry standout James Chase with two seconds left in the first period at 130 and, at 189, Paolini eked out a 3-2 decision.
Who are these guys? Well, Burnham is part of another stellar freshman class, Morrier is a rapidly improving sophomore and Paolini is a junior who missed all of last year with a knee injury.
"It was hell missing last year, I missed it so bad," said Paolini. "I came to every meet and that just made me want it more."
Morrier, who saw limited varsity action last year, was engaged in a back-and-forth battle with Chase, who was a champion at the Bronco Invitational, before using a cradle to secure the pin.
Timberlane coach Barry Chooljian promptly gave him Wrestler of the Meet honors.
"They told me I had the toughest match, but I was ready for it," said Morrier. "I'm just happy to be in the starting lineup of one of the greatest teams in New England."
Burnham, who has been wrestling since the sixth grade, admitted that he was nervous, but said: "I always wanted this (wrestling at home under the spotlight). I'm excited about it."
Other winners for Timberlane included Dylan Lockard (152) and Wes Grew (215), both by pin, and heavyweight Ben Tammany, who settled for a 15-1 major decision.
For Londonderry, which was missing several wrestlers with injuries, the lone winner was 119-pounder Dan Roger, who also won his weight class at the Bronco tournament.
He outlasted Will Smith, 7-5 in overtime.
Timberlane will bring nine wrestlers to the Beast of the East in Delaware this weekend while also sending its B team to the Souhegan Tournament.
