Whittier had its full complement of players for the first time all year according to first-year coach Tom Sipsey and played like it according to first-year coach Tom Sipsey in a 71-63 victory over Greater Lowell. Giovanni Gomez led four players in double figures with 18 points.
Still unbeaten
Whittier's girls basketball team remained unbeaten (7-0), pulling away in the second half for a 60-48 victory over Greater Lowell. Catherine Roache led the way with 17 points and four assists.
Weighty victory
Dan Cormier went from fourth to first on his final throw in the shot put, with a 44-3/4 heave, to pace Methuen's boys track team to a 50-36 victory over Lawrence. Junior classmate Derek Feole was second with a 44-1/2 throw.
Lawrence was paced by 50-yard dash winner Francis Nova and 300 champ Elvis Guslamo, both of whom were also on the winning 4x400 relay.
Distance power
Victories in the 1,000 (Petty Kim), mile (Caroline Kubiszewski) and the 2-mile (Lindsey Garcia) powered the Methuen girls track team to a 48-38 victory over Lawrence.
NE-10 honors Hyslip
Saint Anselm men's ice hockey player John Hyslip of Andover was named Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Week for his productive offense in Sunday's game against the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats. Hyslip notched an assist on the Hawks' first goal of the game at 12:47 in the first period. Early in the second period, he netted a slap shot on a power play to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead. Hyslip is sixth on the team in scoring, with three goals and two assists on the season. He currently leads the Hawks in power-play goals, with three.
