Viselli hits 1,000th
With a first quarter basket, senior guard Ashley Viselli became the first Pentucket female player to score 1,000 career points. Viselli now has 1,014 points while Iola, who was at the game, had 1,062 points.
The Sachems whipped Manchester Essex 67-36.
Good things come in 3s
Trailing by six at the half, North Reading went on a 14-0 run, sparked by three 3-pointers in a row (Nick Rosano, P.J. Dionne, Dave Vollor) in a two-minute span. The Hornets cruised from there, downing Wilmington, 76-69. It's believed to be their first win over the Cats in 12 years.
DeNofrio energizes Hornets
Repelling an early 10-0 deficit, North Reading came all the way back for a 56-52 victory over Wilmington. Casey DeNofrio (11 points) kicked off a second-half full court press that energized the Hornets and turned the tide.
A bit of revenge
Portsmouth won the Class I championship game last winter, but Pelham got a small slice of revenge with a 61-58 win last night. Stephen Spirou had 23 points and Michael Lombard added 16 points in the win.
A dozen from deep
Against Methuen's zone defense, Andover found outside shooting quite acceptable, hitting 43 percent of its 3-point attempts (12 of 28) in a 60-35 victory. All of D.J. Fazio's hoops came from beyond the arc in a 12-point effort as eight different Golden Warrior players hit 3s. Raudy Minaya led the Rangers with 13 points.
A pleasant surprise
Holding Triton's best scorer to just five points in the second half, Chris L'Italien added tough defense to an impressive 17-point, 9-rebound stat line in Georgetown's 75-64 triumph. Returning from an injury that sidelined him all last season, L'Italien has been "the season's most pleasant surprise" according to head coach Mike Rowinski.
All-around dominance
Salem's Nick Miles won all six events and the all-around, but the Blue Devils dropped their season-opener to Burlington, 145-144. Dan Raymond added three second-place finishes and was third in the all-around.
Hillies prevail
Freshman Noah Vonleh had another commanding effort as his 16 points and 13 rebounds led Haverhill to its first victory of the year, 73-60 over Tewksbury. Eric Jones contributed strong defense with five steals to go with 10 points.
Triple-double for Moser
Michael Moser turned in yeoman's work in Fellowship's loss at Northeast, pumping in a season-high 14 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and turning away 10 shots.
Blackjack times three
Shabeli Villa and Paola Gutierrez each pumped in 21 points as Greater Lawrence trumped Lynn Tech 59-43. Villa connected on four 3-pointers while Gutierrez grabbed 15 rebounds.
