Sports in a minute: Lennon commits to UVM

LENNON COMMITS TO UVM

Methuen’s Kelly Lennon, a two-time Eagle-Tribune All-Star and two-time Merrimack Valley Conference Swimmer of the Year for Division 2, has committed to Division 1 University of Vermont.

Lennon qualified for States in every event this past fall while repeating as MVC Division 2 MVP. At the Division 1 state meet, she placed fourth in 200 IM (2:12.20) and third in the 500 freestyle (5:09.80).

She won the 200 IM (2:09.13) and was runner-up in the 500 free (5:06.85) at the North sectional.

Ranked 34th in a class of 462, Lennon received offers from UNH, UVM and URI. She received both athletic and academic scholarship money to Vermont.

BIG GAME ALERT

Central Catholic hockey (8-1-1) plays Malden Catholic (6-2) today at 1:30 p.m.

Malden Catholic is ranked second while Central Catholic is ranked fourth in the The Globe Top 20 poll.

COMICAL JEOPARDY ANSWERS

On Thursday night’s episode of Jeopardy, three contests gave hilarious answers when asked the question: “354 wins did not overcome the controversy as this ex-Red Sox pitcher didn’t make the Hall of Fame cut in 2013?”

“Who is Pete Rose,” answered the first contestant.

“Who is Curt Schilling,” answered the second contestant.

“Who is Mark McGwire,” answered the third contestant.

The obvious answer is Roger Clemens.

GRAND SLAM DELI STRIKES OUT

The Grand Slam Deli in Canton, Mass. definitely struck out big time.

It names wraps after Hall of Famers.

One of the wraps is called “Jimmy Fox.” The Hall of Famer’s name is actually spelled “Jimmie Foxx.” Yes, both the first and last names are spelled incorrectly.

And there’s more ...

One of the wraps is called “Mark McGuire.” Not only is this former slugger not a Hall of Famer — and likely never will be — but his name actually is spelled “Mark McGwire.”

COOL NHL STORY

In his bio on NHLoffcials.com, it states that after Hall of Fame linesman John D’Amico retired following the 1986-87 season, he “joined the league’s Officiating Supervisory staff, though his career was not yet fully over. On the night of March 5, 1988 he was at home watching the Leafs on TV when one of the linesmen was injured and had to leave. D’Amico packed his skates and headed down to Maple Leaf Gardens, working one last time on an emergency basis!”
