Sports in a Minute: Knights, Lowell in track showdown

The Eagle-Tribune

---- —

BIG GAME ALERT

The North Andover and Lowell boys and girls track teams will collide tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at North Andover. All four are unbeaten and the winners will likely end up as MVC Large champions.

MOYNIHAN RANKING

Danny Moynihan of Windham and the Quebec Junior Majors is ranked 66th among North American skaters in the Central Scouting midseason NHL draft rankings. North Andover’s Tyler Bird from Kimball Union is No. 123 among North American skaters, North Reading’s Bobo Carpenter from Austin Prep is No. 146 and ex-Pinkerton star Joey Dudek from Kimball Union is No. 157.

SUPER BOWL REFEREE

Around North Andover, he’s known as Scarlet Knight basketball co-captain Mackenzie Mello’s father, but Jim Mello is also one of the country’s top referees. Good enough to be the head linesman in this year’s Super Bowl.

NO STOPPING LEAH

Junior tri-captain Leah Heinze of North Andover leads Pingree in scoring with nine goals and five assists through 11 games.

FEROCIOUS PHIRI

A lot of people in the know believe Saul Phiri, the nearly 6-foot-4 sophomore from Haverhill, is headed to the bigtime. The Worcester Academy swingman pumped in 23 points against Cushing including 5 for 7 on 3-pointers. Phiri was a rare freshman Eagle-Tribune All-Star last year for the Hillies.

MIDAS TOUCH

Add to the All-Name team U.S. Olympic figure skater Gracie Gold. With a name like that in a sport like figure skating she’ll make a fortune if she ever does win the gold.

COACHING CORONATION

It always cracks me up when St. John’s Prep throws a press conference to announce a new coach. Seems a bit much.

MARVELOUS MAURA

Apologies to North Andover hoopster, class president, gifted scholar Maura Barry who was listed as Maura Berry in our Unsung Heroes. To clarify another mistake, Eagle-Tribune MVP Kirsten Perryman was a shotputter/sprinter for Haverhill (HHS ‘99). Her niece, Krista, was a sprinter for North Andover (NA ‘11).

NATIONAL LEADER

Randy Moss’ 5-10 daughter Sydney Moss averaged 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds last year as a freshman at Florida. She transferred to Division 3 Thomas More College in Kentucky, where she is leading the country in scoring at 25.5 points a game.

JV PHENOM

Good luck to the JV basketball teams who play Clemens (Texas) High. Clemens is led by Kyra Lambert, ESPN’s sixth-ranked junior in the country, who has to play JV because she was ruled ineligible after transferring. She’s averaging 24 points in about 16 minutes a game.

CAPTAIN CUFF

CSNNE sportscaster Dalen Cuff should know his basketball. He captained Columbia in the 2005-06 season and his father, Dennis Cuff, twice led Duquesne in rebounding.
