St. Pierre brings NFL pedigree

Quick hire

It only took St. John’s Prep one day to announce the replacement of Groveland’s Jim O’Leary as its football coach. Former star quarterback Brian St. Pierre of Georgetown was named the day after O’Leary stepped down.

O’Leary certainly coached some great players during his 30-year tenure. St. Pierre, Rob Konrad of North Andover and Wayne Lucier of Salem. N.H.. all played in the NFL. He also coached recently named Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien of Andover.

Succeeding a legend

Former standout and assistant coach Chris Sanborn is taking over for legendary Plymouth (N.H.) football coach Chuck Lenahan, who finally stepped down after 43 years and a startling 356-70-1 record. That included 20 state titles and 31 championship game appearances. Last fall’s team took Lenahan out a winner, defeating Portsmouth 21-14 in overtime in the Division 3 championship game.

Impressive streak

Looking back on the impressive UNH football season, in which it made the Division 1-AA national semifinals after starting the season 1-3, the Wildcats ended the season ranked No. 5 nationally. That was their best finish ever.

Even more impressive, UNH — which qualified for the tournament for a national-best 10th straight year — was also a top-25 team for the 140th straight week. That’s the longest active streak in the nation since Oct. 1, 2012, when Montana’s weekly streak in The Sports Network poll was halted at 195.

Fazioli wins 16-Miler

Samuel Fazioli of Salem, N.H., has run some fine races in the last few months but Sunday may have been his best. He won the Derry Prep 16-Miler, finishing in 1:37.05, nearly a minute ahead of runner-up Chris Kovalchuk of Bedford.

Dan Verrington of Bradford, who is coming off an injury, won his age group while finishing 17th overall in 1:45.35 while Lindsay Willard of Somerville was the top woman, placing 24th overall in 1:46.41.
