Merrimack men, womenlose to Southern Connecticut

Merrimack men’s basketball hung with No. 20 Southern Connecticut State for a while, trailing by just one point at halftime. But the Owls took control in the second half and beat the Warriors 88-76.

Gelvis Solano tossed in 35 points and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Warriors who dropped to 8-11 overall and 6-8 in the Northeast-10 conference.

Southern Connecticut State improved to 17-2 overall and 11-2 in the Northeast-10.

Troy Hammel scored 18 points for Merrimack while Kevin Regan added 10 points and 17 rebounds.

Women lose, too

Aria Johnson scored 13 points and Chloe Rothman added 12 points, six assists and two steals but the Merrimack women lost 72-62 to Southern Connecticut State at home.

Merrimack’s Lexi Sells and Cassie Amenta also chipped in 10 points each and Amenta grabbed six rebounds.

Merrimack dropped to 10-8 overall and 6-7 in the Northeast-10 conference. Southern Connecticut State improved to 10-9 overall and 6-7 in the conference.

Merrimack shot 45.5 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range while holding the visitors to 40.3 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Merrimack’s bench outscored the Owls 17-9. But the Owls won the rebounding battle, 39-29, as well as forcing 18 Merrimack turnovers.
