Walker pleads not guilty to Vegas casino debt

Former Celtic Antoine Walker pleaded not guilty to criminal bad check charges alleging he failed to repay almost $1 million in gambling debts and penalties to three Las Vegas casinos.

A Clark County District Court hearing master, Melisa De La Garza, set trial for Nov. 22 in Las Vegas. Walker and his lawyer, Jonathan Powell, said nothing to reporters after the brief arraignment.

Powell has said he and the Clark County district attorney's office were negotiating toward resolving the Nevada case without sending Walker to prison. Walker could face probation or up to 12 years behind bars if convicted.

Pro football: Club owner says Vick left just before shooting

The spokesman for the nightclub where Michael Vick held his birthday bash says the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback left in a car minutes before a shooting outside, contradicting a timeline by Vick's attorney.

Larry Woodward, Vick's attorney, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that his client left the club at least 10 minutes, and perhaps as many as 20, before the shooting.

Allen Fabijan, spokesman for Guadalajara Mexican restaurant and nightclub, says a surveillance camera video shows a car with a man he says is Vick inside leaving at 2:07 a.m. — about 4 minutes before the shooting a block away.

More pro football: Never short on words, Rex Ryan to write book

Rex Ryan, already headed to HBO, is writing a book, too.

The brash, charismatic New York Jets coach is penning a book that will combine autobiography and football strategy.

Doubleday acquired the untitled book's North American rights and plans to publish it in spring 2011 — potentially not long after the Super Bowl win Ryan is gunning for.

Ryan, whose Jets will be featured on HBO's "Hard Knocks" training camp series this summer, will write the book with Don Yaeger, a former Sports Illustrated editor and author of books on former NFL stars Warren Moon and Walter Payton.

Jason Kaufman, vice president and executive editor of Doubleday, said Ryan "has such a powerful and unique leadership style" and he expects the book "to demonstrate how you lead in certain circumstances."

Pro hockey: Devils re-sign Clarkson to multiyear deal

Right wing David Clarkson signed a three-year, $8 million contract with the New Jersey Devils, just two days after the team gave the feisty forward a qualifying offer that prevented him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

The 26-year-old Clarkson had 11 goals and 13 assists in only 46 games last season. He missed a large portion of the season because of a broken right leg.

Golf: Small wins second straight PGA pro title

Mike Small birdied three of his last five holes to win his second straight PGA professional championship, holding off Sonny Skinner by three strokes.

The University of Illinois men's coach shot a 1-over 73 in his final round at French Lick Resort to finish 8 under and win his third overall PGA national title, tying Larry Gilbert's record.

Countdown to the start of NBA free agency

DAYS REMAINING: 1.

THE END: LeBron James set up camp in Ohio, Dwyane Wade was preparing for visitors in Chicago and Chris Bosh was settling in Dallas, the final day before the storm of free agency would begin. And yes, in Miami, there's still talk of the three biggest stars in this free agent class joining forces. "That's why the Yankees have been so successful. That's why, traditionally speaking, the Lakers have been successful, traditionally speaking, Boston has been successful, because they put talent on the floor that created championships. Period," Heat legend Alonzo Mourning was saying at a "We Want Wade" rally.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW: It's all fair game. After the clock hits 12:01 a.m. in the East, any team can talk to any free agent. Deals can be struck, but nothing can be signed — and therefore official — until July 8. And teams likely won't know their salary-cap number for the coming year until July 7.

MILES SAVED: The Mavericks won't be going to Germany after all. Dirk Nowitzki is coming to them. Nowitzki's people called Mavs president Donnie Nelson to say "stay home" shortly before Nelson was heading to Germany to meet with them. Turns out, Nowitzki will take his first meeting of free agency deep in the heart of Texas, which the Mavs felt was a positive sign he would stay put.

TWEET OF THE DAY: Bosh, on the final hours before it all begins: "The day has been moving extremely slowly. It's always like that when something important is coming up!"
