HUGE BOXING EVENT COMING TO ROCK
The good news is that ESPN’s Friday Night Fights will make a return to Rockingham Park in Salem on July 19.
Top quality professional boxing, ready for national prime time TV, invades the Granite State with a pretty solid main event involving 31-1 Nigerian junior welterweight Ajose Olusegun (31-1) and Philadelphia tough guy Hank Lundy (22-3-1).
One of my local favorites, Lawrence veteran Eddie “Thunder” Caminero is involved in the undercard.
He’ll have his hands full with undefeated Vermonter, Chris Gilbert.
Don’t sell the 7-8 Caminero short, though. All seven of his wins are via the knockout.
Promoters are hoping to lock down a fight for unbeaten Lawrence heavyweight, Alexis, “The Answer” Santos.
Now 9-0 with eight knockouts, Santos is listed on the card, but no opponent is named.
We’ll keep an eye on that situation.
JUNIORS HIT NACC TEES FOR QUALIFIER TODAY
Fresh off what was an exciting Joseph F. Healey Memorial Championship, it will be an interesting Monday morning as many potential stars of the next generation of area golfers hit North Andover Country Club for the MGA Junior Amateur qualifier.
Teeing it up are Will Berberich of NACC, Rich Citrano of Andover CC, John Keenan of Methuen, Jack Kelly of NACC, Mark Mancini of Merrimack Valley GC, Jack McKay of NACC, Chris Mitchell of Hillview CC and Brendon Shirley of Bradford CC.
TOUGH BREAK FOR HILLIES
According to sources, it seems that Saul Phiri is slated to leave Haverhill High after one season and head off to Worcester Academy. The loss of Phiri has to hurt the reigning Merrimack Valley Conference small division champions. But ... The Hillies do return a bundle for Mike Trovato’s club, a team that won a state tourney game as well in Division 1, shocking Westford Academy. Remember, Anthony Dionne was the small Player of the Year, and Matt Jameson is one of the most accomplished returning three-point shooters in the region.
In addition, Mike Attah and Matt Burns return up front, while a solid group of underclassmen should bolster the program.
