Enjoyed a brilliant season. Ran area-best 10.95 (tied for 8th all-time in area) to win MVC Meet, setting school record. Won Haverhill Boosters with 11.2 in rain. Focused on 200 in postseason, placing second at All-States with area-record 21.71. Won EMass. Division 1 Meet (22.55) and Andover Boosters (22.13) and was fourth at New Englands (22.13). Eagle-Tribune All-Star in 55 in the winter. Will run at Northern Essex.
ZACH CICIO, Pinkerton Jr., 200
In his first season of outdoor track was second at Meet of Champions in 22.40, which moved him to 15th all-time in area. Took third at N.H. Division 1 meet in 23.16. Also ran on 4x100 team that was sixth (45.73) at Division 1 meet and third at Merrimack Invitational (44.61). Placed third in 400 (52.14) at Londonderry Invitational. Eagle-Tribune All-Star in 300 in winter. Previously played lacrosse. Hampstead resident.
CONNOR KWIECIEN, Pinkerton Jr., 400
Ran area-best 49.30 to take second at Meet of Champions, moving to eighth in all-time area rankings. Was third at Division 1 States (51.38) and first at Londonderry Invitational (50.78) and Merrimack Invitational (50.99). Ran on 4x400 relay which won Londonderry Invitational (50.78) and on 4x100 that was sixth at Division 1. Eagle-Tribune All-Star in 600 in winter. Class vice president. Ranked in top 15 percent of class.
CHRIS POGGI, Pinkerton Sr., 800
Repeat Eagle-Tribune All-Star. Won Division 1 title in 1:57.10. Also ran area-best 1:55.37. His 1:55.25 last spring ranks seventh all-time in the area. Ran a 4:31.30 1,600. Led Astros to victory in 1,600 sprint medley at Souhegan Relays. Ran on 4x400 relay and occasionally even 4x100. Eagle-Tribune All-Star in 1,000 in winter and cross country in fall. Will run at UNH.
MIKE MALDARI, Andover Sr., 800
Saved his best meet for last, breaking Adam Vetere’s school record in 1:56.01, good for eighth at All-States. That was second best in the area this season and 20th best all-time. Took sixth at EMass. Division 1 Meet (1:57.03), fourth at MVC Meet (1:57.61) and third at Andover Boosters (1:59.44). Member of Eagle-Tribune All-Star 4x800 relay last winter and in spring 2011. Will run at UMass Amherst.
JACOB JOHNS, North Andover Sr., distance
Placed sixth at EMass. Division 2 Meet in mile (4:29.31). Was second in 800 at MVC Meet (1:57.44). Ran on 4x800 relay which won EMass. Division 2 title (8:05.54). Clocked at 10:11.94 in 2-mile. His 51.5 leg helped Knights take second in 4x400 and clinch EMass. Division 2 relays team title. Ran on sprint medley that was clocked in 3:36.41 at New Balance Nationals. Also runs cross country. Plans to run and study engineering at UMaine. Won a $10,000 Merit Scholarship.
JEREMY ZANNINI, Central Catholic Sr., 110 HH
Placed third at EMass. Division 2 meet in 15.07, second best in area this spring to teammate D’Andre Drummond-Mayrie’s 14.98. Took second at MVC Meet (15.61). Long jumped 21-0 1/2. Ran on 4x100 relay which took third at MVC Meet (44.15). Placed 13th at North Sectional Decathlon with 5,148 points. Repeat Eagle-Tribune All-Star. Starting defensive back in football. Will run track at Assumption. Atkinson resident.
ALEX DEHULLU, Central Catholic Sr., 400 IH
Broke his own school record with a 56.03, good for second at EMass. Division 2 meet. That ranks second all-time in the area. Won MVC Meet (56.02) and Haverhill Boosters (57.2) and was third at Andover Boosters (56.69). Ran on fourth-place 4x400 relay team (3:34.13) at EMass. Division 2 meet. Team MVP. Eagle-Tribune All-Star decathlete last spring. Eagle-Tribune All-Star hurdler indoors. Groveland resident will run at URI.
MARK ZAVRL, Andover Sr., Javelin
Set modern area record (2003-present) with a 193-8 at Weston Twilight, adding nearly eight feet to 10-year-old mark. Placed first at MVC Meet (187-10), third at EMass. Division 1 (183-4) and All-States (185-6), fifth at New Englands (178-2) and ninth at New Balance Nationals (187-7). Repeat Eagle-Tribune All-Star. Standout linebacker/kicker will play football and throw javelin as a post-grad at Phillips Exeter.
SAM WEEKS, Methuen Sr., Discus
Heaved area-leading 142-1 to win MVC Meet. Was third at Andover Boosters (140-5). Placed fifth in shot put at MVC Meet (50-5) and Haverhill Invitational (50-6) and sixth at EMass Division 2 meet (50-1). At 5-foot-11, 190-pounds an Eagle-Tribune All-Star defensive lineman. Earned John Hannigan Award for school’s top football and track athlete. Will play both sports at Worcester State.
RYAN DOHERTY, Central Catholic Sr., Shot Put
Threw area-best 52-8 to win Andover Boosters. Took third at MVC Meet (50-6 1/2), fourth at EMass. Division 2 Meet (50-10) and third at Haverhill Invitational (51-3 3/4). Also won javelin at EMass. Division 2 meet (175-2) and Andover Boosters (166-7) and was third at MVCs (162-7). Eagle-Tribune defensive MVP in football. Shot put All-Star this winter and last spring. Methuen resident. Will play football at Stonehill.
RAY BELANGER-DELOGE, Central Catholic Sr., Pole Vault
Entering All-States with a personal best of just 12-0, nailed vaults of 12-6 and an area-best 13-0 to place seventh. Took first at MVC Meet (12-0), third at Haverhill Invitational (10-6) and fourth at Andover Boosters (12-0) and EMass. Division 2 Meet (11-6). Also ran 200. Ran on 4x100 (3rd, 44.15) and 4x400 (4th, 3:34.13) teams at MVC Meet. Plaistow resident. Top student. Will attend Virginia and may vault there.
STARLIN ORTIZ, Londonderry Soph., High Jump
Placed sixth at New Englands with an area-best 6-5. Took second at Division 1 Meet (6-2), third at Meet of Champions (6-3) and first at Londonderry Invitational (6-2). Also ran 200, taking third at Meet of Champions (22.65) and Division 1 Meet (23.17). Ran on 4x100 team which was fourth at Division 1 meet (45.31) and fifth at Meet of Champions (44.08). Sister Yorgelis was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star in winter track.
KEVIN CHEAM, Pelham Sr., Long Jump
Victorious at Division 2 Meet (area-best 22-9.5, 11th best in area history) and Meet of Champions (21-11.75). Took second in 300 hurdles at Meet of Champions (40.20). Had great day at Division 2 Meet: won long jump, second in 300 hurdles (40.69) and 110 hurdles (15.12), third in triple jump (42-6.75). Won N.H. decathlon (5,433 points). Running back in football. Will run track at Keene State.
PATRICK IRWIN, North Andover Sr., Triple Jump
Victorious at MVC Meet (area-best 44-2 3/4) and Andover Boosters (43-5 1/2). Took third at EMass. Division 2 meet (43-2 1/2). Only started triple jumping at end of junior season but proved to be a natural when he did 42-10 1/4. Placed third at MVC Meet in high jump (6-2). “Patrick was as critical to our success off the track as he was on,” said coach Steve Nugent. Will compete at High Point University.
D’ANDRE DRUMMOND-MAYRIE, Central Catholic Jr., Decathlon
Placed third with area-best 5,966 points (12th all-time in the area) to lead Raiders to team victory at North Sectional Decathlon. Improved by almost 1,000 points from last year. Won 110 hurdles at Andover Boosters with area-best 14.98. Ran on 4x100 relay team which was third at MVC Meet (44.15). 6-foot, 200-pound defensive back has been offered scholarships to Bryant and Colgate. Lawrence resident.
JOHN BRAGA, North Reading Sr., Utility
Three times an Eagle-Tribune All-Star in track and once in soccer. At EMass. Division 4 meet, won long jump (22-7, tied 14th all-time in area), was second in high jump (6-4) and fifth in 110 hurdles (16.24). Won high jump (6-2) and long jump (21-11) and was fourth in 110 hurdles at CAL Meet. Placed fourth at North Sectional Decathlon (5,848 points). Will attend Merrimack College.
Methuen’s O’Donnell a star for the ages
Mike O’Donnell closed out his historic high school career with a bang, earning his fourth Eagle-Tribune MVP honor and making his fifth All-Star team.
The Methuen senior was also MVP in the indoor season and in cross country last fall.
O’Donnell, an All-Scholastic all three seasons as a senior, won the All-State title (4:20.69), EMass. Division 1 crown (area-leading 4:16.08) and Andover Boosters title (4:17.76) in the mile. He also won the 2-mile at the MVC Meet (area-best 9:26.76) and ran the area’s third-best time in the 800 (1:56.23).
He’s among the all-time area leaders in the 800 (8th, 1:55.25 last spring) and mile (6th, 4:14.88 this winter).
A memorable highlight to the season was O’Donnell shattering ex-Ranger great John Janowski’s 40-year-old Andover Boosters mile record.
“Mike is a fantastic runner,” said Janowski. “He has the mindset, he has the build. I think the sky is the limit.”
The redhead signed a scholarship to run at UConn.
