Kemp’s huge day not enough for Phillips

ANDOVER — Larkin Kemp hauled in two touchdown passes and collected 237 receiving yards, but it wasn’t enough for Phillips to get into the win column, as they fell short on a 33-20 decision to Cushing.

Kemp caught a 69-yard TD pass to open the scoring in the first quarter. His 25-yard TD reception in the second quarter gave Phillips (0-3) a 14-12 lead and things were moving in the right direction for the Big Blue.

But Cushing’s Jack Wilson took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards give the Penguins the lead that it would never relinquish.

“That touchdown really hurt,” said Phillips head coach Leon Modeste. “At 0-3 you look for little victories and, one victory for us was that we were in the game.”

Quarterback Joe Verhaegh led all Phillips rushers with 27 yards. He also passed for 289 yards. Nate Scyocurka scored the final Phillips touchdown on an 18-yard reception, in the fourth quarter.

Phillips plays at Northfield Mount Hermon on Saturday (3:30 p.m.).
