Haverhill's Ward taking Tri-City by Storm

Streaky knights

I get a kick out of the fact that the list of the Bowdoin College football players with the longest streaks for consecutive games with a catch includes three ex-North Andover High stars: Mike Cavanaugh Jr. with 21, Doug Brawn with 17 and Steve Lafond with 16.

Oversleeping Muldoon

The aforementioned Doug Brawn will always hold a special place in my heart. Early in my career, I (gulp) overslept for the Knights-Masco Thanksgiving game. During that time coach Mike Cavanaugh Sr. was ticked off at me for something so I was leery of giving him a call. I got the background from another paper and then called Brawn for quotes.

The funny thing was, one of my bosses, who thankfully for my career didn’t know I missed the game, said my story was the best work I’d done yet!

Taken by storm

Brian Ward of Haverhill is starring for the Tier 1 USHL’s Tri-City Storm from Kearney, Neb. The 6-2, 190-pound forward, who is being recruited by several Division 1 colleges, has a team-high three goals in five games. He scored the winning goal with 38 seconds left vs. Sioux City.

Nelsen’s options

North Andover’s 6-6 senior Isaiah Nelsen has received scholarship offers from Merrimack and Assumption. UMass Lowell, which also offered, is likely out of the picture after it received a commitment from another forward.

Young Indiana Jones

Add to the All-Name team Prospect Mountain golfer Indiana Jones, who finished fifth at the N.H. girls state championships, and Northeastern University volleyball player Ava Cramp.

Athletic browns

Ted Brown (N.C. State ‘79) still holds the ACC career rushing record and went on to star with the Vikings. His son, J.T. Brown, took a completely different path. The 2011 Frozen Four MVP for Minnesota-Duluth, J.T. will be playing for the Lightning when the lockout is over.
