Ferrara sets record

Methuen weight lifter Nikko Ferrara, who set a world record last year as a 19-year-old, did it again at the APA-WPA Beast of The East Powerlifting Championship in Durham, Conn. Competing in the 20-23 year-old division, he set a new standard with a dead lift of 685 pounds, 35 more than his best mark six months ago. In December, Ferrara is going up a weight class to 225 pounds in an attempt to set another world record.

Who’s the coach?

There is still no word on who will coach the Haverhill High baseball team next spring.

Athletic director Tom O’Brien coached the team on what was supposedly an interim basis last year and did an admirable job, leading the Hillies to the playoffs and receiving praise from players and parents alike. Haverhill went 11-10 following a 2-18 season in 2011.

After the season, O’Brien first stated that he would not coach next year, then said he’d decide by mid-summer. He put that off until the start of school and then said he’d decide within two weeks after school started. As of last week, he still had not decided, saying that some issues needed to be resolved and there’s still time to find a good coach if it’s not him.

My question is: Why the delay? Either make a commitment to coach or find the best possible coach while there is plenty of time. As one player, who wants a decision made as soon as possible, told me recently, “A good coach has to prepare, get to know his players, have an offseason program and not just coach in the spring.”

Quinn award to Rembis

Jack Rembis of the Andover Striders will be the 2012 winner of the Phil Quinn award, which is presented at the Mill Cities Relay in December and is given to someone who promotes and advances the sport of running. A resident of Lawrence and Hampton, N.H., Rembis has been instrumental in sustaining the Mill Cities over the years, has helped organize countless races and has facilitated cooperation among various running clubs. He’s also a fine runner.
