ANDOVER — Nate Scyocurka took a third quarter kickoff 90 yards for a game-tying touchdown, as Phillips looked for its second straight win.
But that was as far as the comeback effort would go as Deerfield Academy took advantage of two fourth quarter interceptions to hand the Big Blue a 21-7 home loss.
Scyocurka’s touchdown erased Deerfield’s go-ahead score, which came just moments earlier. Deerfield used two short fields to score a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns and earn the win.
“Our defense played well today,” said Phillips head coach Leon Modeste. “But we did not play well offensively. They (Deerfield) gave us the pass but we were not effective with that.”
Scyocurka’s 46 yards led the Phillips’ rushing attack. Larkin Kemp (39 receiving yards) was on the receiving end for three of Joe Vereagh’s nine completions (9 of 25).
Sophomore Bob Needham of North Reading had a strong defensive game for Phillips, recording 10 tackles (seven solo) and a sack.
Phillips plays at Worcester State on Saturday (7:15 p.m.).
