Merrimack tennis wins NCAA opener

---- — Merrimack College opened the NCAA Mens Tennis Tournament with a 5-1 win over Chestnut Hill to move to 15-4 on the year.

“Our team played extremely hard today to earn the win and we are looking forward to tomorrow,” said head coach Sean Tully. “For the second-straight season we will be playing for a opportunity to play in the Sweet 16 which is a great feeling but we must keep focused tomorrow in order to make that leap.”

Tomorrow at 10 a.m., the Warriors face either New York Tech or southern New Hampshire in Round 2. ...

Merrimack softball finished its 2013 campaign at 21-22-1 with a doubleheader sweep of Franklin Pierce. Kellie Jo Deardorf won the opener, 5-0, going five shutout innings and striking out five with a walk. Salem’s Val Bauer got the five-inning shutout win in Game 2, 12-0. Bauer allowed three hits and fanned three.
