---- — Bramanti transfers
Ex-Andover Super Teamer Joe Bramanti has left Wright State. The freshman guard didn’t put up big numbers (1.6 points, 1.1 assists in 14.5 minutes) but his trademark defense and toughness earned him 12 starts.
Coach Billy Donlon Jr. said, “It really was out of the blue. He has to do what’s best for him. The timing really hurts us in terms of recruiting.”
Cakes are baking
UTL birthday wishes go out to James Madison basketball manager Joseph Kuykendall of Andover (19 today), former Salem basketball star Russ Bauters (turns 45 Tuesday), Merrimack soccer star Jackie Sullivan of North Andover (turns 21 Tuesday), and Houston Astros slugger Carlos Pena of Haverhill (turns 35 Friday).
Another Carlos pena
Speaking of Carlos. Greater Lawrence Tech has a senior reserve infielder by the name of Carlos Pena. He may not equal his major league namesake, but Reggie coach Kevin Maloney says he’s been a nice addition to the squad.
Jenna Galster is in a distinct minority as a female head coach of a boys high school basketball team. She was an assistant the last four years at Hopkinton (Mass.) High and recently was named head coach.
Our region boasts a woman who does a fine job as a boys assistant coach in Andover’s Carol Martini.
Loved that the first Eagle-Tribune online comment on record-setting track star Mark Zavrl was a compliment from Haverhill’s Andrew Firger. He held the old javelin record and for a college destination was pushing UConn, where Firger competed.
carpy to BU
Austin Prep sophomore Bobo Carpenter of North Reading verbally committed to BU. His father is the great Bobby Carpenter and his sister, Alex, is a BC All-American.
year of the cat
An item here mentioned three freshmen from Andover High playing in Friday’s UConn-UMass women’s lacrosse NCAA Tourney game. A big star for UConn is a senior from Andover, Cat Gross, who scored 23 goals this year. UMass won the game 14-10.
Maryland over BC
Much to the delight of the area’s No. 1 Maryland fan, Central Catholic teacher-coach Katie Andrade, St. John’s Prep star running back Johnathan Thomas committed to the Terps. He also considered Arkansas and BC.
Syracuse women’s basketball signed Isabella Slim of the Netherlands. With a name like that, if she doesn’t make it in basketball, she could have a future on the professional poker tour.
Babcock’s son to Merrimack
The Eagle-Tribune’s Mike McMahon tweeted a couple interesting hockey tidbits. One is forward Michael Babcock, the son of Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, committed to Merrimack. Also former Bruin Shawn Bates is the new coach at his alma mater, Medford High.
