---- — Champion again

Pinkerton Academy grad Zach Mathieu helped power Franklin Pierce University to the NCAA Division 2 East Regional Championship, which climaxed yesterday as the Ravens clocked Wilmington University of Delaware, 5-1, in the title game yesterday at Southern New Hampshire University.

The junior Mathieu went two for four and scored a run, finishing the five-game regional with a .429 on-base percentage.

Next up for Mathieu and the Ravens will be the NCAA championship tourney. For the tourney, the heavy-slugging first baseman was 5 for 17 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBIs.

WELLS GOING FOR 2

Whittier Tech two-sport standout Andrew Wells has his sights set on continuing on that run. The right-handed pitcher will attend Worcester State next year, where he’ll get the opportunity continue his athletic career on the mound as well on the basketball court.

Wells was the region’s leading 3-point shooter for coach Tom Sipsey’s Wildcats.

TALKING PAPI

David Ortiz’s two-homer game on Saturday night was an eventful one. It was the 38th two-homer night for Ortiz as a member of the Red Sox, passing Ted Williams at 37 for most multi-homer games in team history. Also his 38 multi-homer games since 2003 are second-best in the big leagues behind Albert Pujols (44).

ALUM LOOKING TO STEP UP for LANCERS

Lawrence High grad Ron Drouin wouldn’t mind doing a solid for his alma mater tonight in the opening round of the Spinner Cup Baseball Tournament at LeLacheur Stadium in Lowell. Drouin’s Tewksbury Redmen will face Billerica at 5 p.m. This is a league game.

A win for the Redmen, behind starter John Cave, would give surprising Lawrence High sole possession of the Merrimack Valley Conference Small title. Lawrence, at 11-4, has already guaranteed itself a share. Billerica, at 10-4, can claim a piece of the crown with a win tonight.

LOOKING AHEAD

Don’t forget, the traditional Lawrence Invitational Baseball Tournament is on tap this week with the Lancers looking to re-claim their crown after watching North Andover High take it away in 2012. This year’s tourney slate has the semifinals -- Lawrence hosts Methuen Wednesday at 7 p.m., and Tewksbury faces North Andover at Devlin Field Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The consolation and title games will be held Friday night.
