---- — HAVERHILL — Whittier Tech and Haverhill High made all their noise in the first inning, before the pitchers took over.
When the dust settled in the intra-city classic, it was Haverhill’s Sean Wrenn barely outdueling Wildcat righty Andrew Wells in a 3-2 thriller.
The victory was the third in the last four years for the Hillies in the collision between these two rivals.
Haverhill continues its hot streak, making it six in a row to improve to 12-7 with only Thursday’s finale at Masconomet remaining.
Touched for a couple runs on three walks and a hit in the first, Wrenn settled in brilliantly in the one-hitter with five strikeouts to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Wrenn actually moved down 17 of the last 19 batters he faced.
And on this afternoon, he had to be that with Wells matching him pitch for pitch. The senior notched career strikeout 200 in the defeat, his first of the year. He finished with a six-hitter, walking nobody. Wells and the Cats will go back to the CAC grind, looking to lock down the large division title this week.
Dan Burrows had a two-run single and Tommy Maguire went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Anthony Licciardello had the lone hit for the Wildcats.
