Schimpf's blasts lift Fisher Cats

PORTLAND — In a game the Fisher Cats led throughout, it came down to two key situations late in the game to decide their contest with the Portland Sea Dogs (24-18) last night. Joel Carreno stranded the bases loaded in the eighth before Ryan Schimpf blasted his second homer of the game in the ninth to deliver the Fisher Cats to a 7-3 win.

The late-inning drama started with the Fisher Cats leading 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Relief pitcher Evan Crawford loaded the bases with only one out to force the Fisher Cats to go to the bullpen for Carreno, who picked up a four-out save on Sunday afternoon in New Britain.

With the sacks full, Carreno’s extra workload didn’t bother him. He struck out the final two men of the inning throwing nine straight breaking balls. The K’s preserved the 4-3 lead to set up Schimpf in the ninth.

Marcus Walden (3-4) was the winner, the day he learned he was the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. He wasn’t as good as he was last week against Portland when he tossed 7.2 shutout innings, but he gave up just two earned to earn his third win.
