Sachems grab late pin for sweep and rise to .500 ; Gonzalez shines for Hillies

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — With numbers and depth at a premium, Pentucket has often made the most of its opportunities in recent years and that seems to be the case this year.

The Sachems won three times yesterday to improve to 4-4, the key win in the home quad-meet being 37-33 over Haverhill when Garrett Lechski recorded a pin at 106 pounds in the last match of the meet. Tom and Jeff Funk were both 3-0 on the day and so were Kevin Clark and Mike McCarron.

Sophomore Josh Wesolowski was 2-1, his lone loss being a close decision to Hudson’s standout, a returning Division 3 state placer currently ranked No. 1 at 132 pounds.

“We had some kids wrestle really well and it’s nice to be at .500,” said Pentucket coach Dennis Puleo.

For Haverhill, first-year sophomore Efrain Gonzalez recorded three pins at 160, giving him four pins in four matches, while Orlando Rojas (126) and Ashante Franklin (152) were also 3-0.

Pinkerton wins title

Moving up three weight classes in a year is never easy, but Pinkerton sophomore Jean-Luc Lemieux seems to be up to the challenge. An Eagle-Tribune All-Star at 106 pounds last year, Lemieux placed first at 126 pounds at yesterday’s Hollis-Brookline Tournament and was named the tourney Outstanding Wrestler.

With Dakota Kroll following with a first at 132 and Pinkerton showing good depth, Lemieux sparked the Astros to first place in the 16-team tournament, followed by Bedford and rising Windham.

For the Jaguars, Chris Ferri led the way by winning the 182-pound title while Jeff Armstrong (113) and Zach Sprague (120) came in second.

Owls struggle at Beast

Timberlane had a tough first day at the Beast of the East in Delaware, widely considered the toughest tournament in the country, but there were some highlights. Tyler Fitzpatrick won his first match at 106 and with two pins in the consolation bracket and a 4-2 decision, was still alive for a place, 170-pounder Josh Riley followed a setback in the first round with two pins in consolation action and Adam Corey (120), freshman Ryan Peters (126) and Harry Denoncourt (182) all had 2-2 records and wrestled well.

Peters lost an opening 2-0 decision and bowed out with a 4-2 setback, but he also had a pin and a technical fall..

Sughrue back strong

Paul Sughrue, held out of Methuen’s last meet with a minor injury, returned to the lineup with five wins, while Christian Monserrat and Jimmy Summa were both also 5-0 as Methuen remained unbeaten with a sweep of Brockton, Mansfield, Danvers, St. John’s-Shrewsbury and Leominster. Mike Golio was unbeaten at 220.

Soaring North Reading/Lynnfield swept a quad-meet, routing Malden Catholic, North Quincy and Marblehead to improve to 8-0. Josh Intorcio of North Reading was impressive at 160 with a pin among his three wins, improving to 7-1 on the season.

Raiders net 6 titles

Central Catholic had a big day at the Brookline Round-Robin Tournament,at which no team scores were held. Andover transfer Jack Kiely won his first tournament, going 4-0 at 113, and he was joined on the top of the podium by Brandon Desfosses (120), Pat Lacroix (126), Dave Sergi (160), Ben Tavitian (220) and Dave Veilleux (285). Had team scores been kept, Central clearly would have been the team champion.

North Andover had no problem sweeping a quad-meet at Whittier Tech, the closest meet (50-24) coming against the host Wildcats. Eight wrestlers won at least two matches on the day for the Knights (5-1). Cooper McCloud was impressive with two pins at 145. For Whittier, 220-pounder Austin Sciacca remained unbeaten.
