Huge decision gives Central Catholic's Desfosses a boost

LAWRENCE — Call it a signature win.

Central Catholic freshman 120-pounder Brandon Desfosses could certainly do that yesterday when he defeated Billerica ace Nick Derosa 3-1, improving his record to 23-2.

Derosa was ranked as the state’s top 120-pounder and had handed Desfosses one of his two losses, 4-3 in the Lowell Holiday Tournament.

Desfosses got the only takedown of the match and they both had an escape, accounting for the final score.

“I was really amped for this,” said Desfosses, who also defeated standout Lawrence 113-pounder Rizky Riyanto 9-4 yesterday in a later match. “I was more aggressive today and I tried not to give him too many openings.”

During the summer, Desfosses who pinned his way to the New England middle school title last year, set his rookie season goals high, to be an All-State and New England champion. After yesterday, he’s not backing down.

“I feel real confident right now,” he said. “I give all the credit to Pat (Lacroix) and my coaches ... I’m feeling good now.”

Central Catholic coach Dennis King isn’t ready to give his standout freshman too many superlatives, but he said: “He’s definitely coming along. What’s really good about him is that he wrestles his best against the best wrestlers.”

Desfosses’ only other loss this year was to Timberlane standout Adam Corey, also at the Lowell Holiday Tournament. Any revenge match against him will probably have to wait to the New England tournament, held again this year in Providence.
