Merrimack basketball splits

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Behind a career-high 34 point effort from sophomore Chloe Rothman, including the 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to send the game into overtime, the Merrimack women’s basketball team beat Southern Connecticut 74-70.

Rothman scored 23 of her points in the second half of the Warriors come-from-behind victory. The 34 point effort is the second most points scored in a game in Merrimack team history, just two points back of the school record of 36 points by Gennifer Roy last season against New Haven. Rothman finished off her impressive day 12 for 25 from the floor including 5 of 12 from 3-point range. Rothman went 9 for 18 from the floor and 4 for 8 from 3-point range in the second half and overtime combined.

Kelly Schatzlein was the only other Warrior to score in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.

With 25 seconds to play and trailing by three points, the Warriors looked to their hot hand to try and force the overtime period and that she did. Rothman took the inbound pass and with 16 seconds left drilled a one-footed three pointer to tie the score at 64. The Warriors pulled away in the overtime period, outscoring the Owls 10-6.

Regan’s efforts for naught

NORTH ANDOVER — Despite a career-high 19-points from junior Kevin Regan, the Merrimack men lost to Southern Connecticut 73-69. The Warriors charged back into the game by scoring nine of the final 10 points of the contest, but it wouldn’t be enough, as the Owls hung on to keep Merrimack winless on the road.

“We made some mistakes at a key point of the game,” head coach Bert Hammel said. “That wound up being the difference. We dug ourselves to deep of a hole, and Southern Connecticut capitalized.” Regan led the team in scoring for the second straight outing, finishing 7-for-10 shooting. Freshman Gelvis Solano added 18 points while Mike Clifford had 12 points. Merrimack returns to action Wednesday at Saint Rose at 7:30 p.m.
