Weal's 2 goals lead Monarchs past Pirates

MANCHESTER, N.H.—Center Jordan Weal scored two goals to lead the Manchester Monarchs 5-2 over the Portland Pirates yesterday.

Weal has five goals in his past seven games.

Manchester (20-17-2-2) is in second in the Atlantic Division with 44 points behind first-place Portland (24-15-1-1).

The Monarchs took their first lead of the game at 16:39 of the second period when left wing Marc-Andre Cliche scored to make it 3-2.

Monarchs left wing David Meckler also netted a goal, the 75th of his career Monarchs career. That ranks him second all-time in franchise history.

Monarchs goalie Martin Jones (10-13-2) stopped 29 of 31 shots. Pirates goalie Chad Johnson (14-8-0) made 25 saves on 30 shots.

Manchester went 1 for 4 on the power play. Portland was 1 for 6 with the man advantage.

The Monarchs host the Providence Bruins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
