Final Score

School record

Nicole Stevens set a school record in the floor exercise with a 9.8, breaking the mark she tied last week, and also had a career-high score of 38.0 as North Andover beat Lowell 138.75-135.55.

Tough up front

Whittier’s girls dominated underneath in a 63-55 victory over Newburyport. Samnel Vonleh had 12 points to go with her 10 rebounds while Josie Sanchez and Dominque Ortiz had 10 and 9 rebounds respectively. Michaela Martin led the scoring with 18 points.

Season-high score

Andover’s gymnastics team took the top three places in every event on its way to a season-high score in a 143.6-131.3 victory over Acton-Boxboro. Courtney Carver (37.15) and Jessie Livingston were one-two in the all-around for the unbeaten Warriors (7-0).

Marotta cited again

Merrimack College junior goalie Sam Marotta was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. He made 31 saves in the Warriors 1-1 tie on Friday night in Orono, Maine. In Saturday’s win, Marotta recorded 22 saves, leading Merrimack to the 3-2 victory. The win moved the Warriors into fifth place in Hockey East, two points behind Providence and Boston University with one game-in-hand on each team.

NECC turned over

The Northern Essex men’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to UConn-Avery Point, 59-58, to drop to 8-10. Matt Sifferlen led the Knights with 21 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists while Will Angelini combined 16 points and 11 rebounds and Kyle Davis chipped in with 10 points.

SJP’s mat romps

The St. John’s Prep wrestling team continued to pummel the opposition, improving to 31-3 with three routs in a quad-meet, including 46-15 over a good Shawsheen team. North Andover’s Ian Butterbrodt and Haverhill’s Corey Jean-Jacques were both unbeaten on the day.

Near miss

Methuen hockey nearly had its first win of the year, and a major upset at that, but Danvers (7-3-2) scored with about seven minutes left in a 1-1 tie. Matt Bauchman had the goal, Chris Milone (17 saves) shined in net and Dylan Yameen and Mike Baglieri played fine all-around games.

Raiders tie No. 1 team

Central Catholic’s hockey team took it to Springfield Cathedral, the No. 1-ranked team in the state, early and then had to rally back for an impressive 3-3 tie at Holy Cross.

Central took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Alex Lester while outshooting Cathedral 15-3. “We were flying out there,” said Central coach Mike Jankowski, whose club improved to 8-2-2.

But Cathedral (9-0-2) rallied with three unanswered goals in the second period, forcing the Raiders to rally back with goals by Mike Kelleher and Lloyd Hayes for the tie.

Ng equals victory

Notre Dame of Lawrence’s Daizha Ng had the game of her career, with a best-ever 12 points as well as 5 offensive rebounds and 5 steals as the Hurricanes defeated Rockport 40-32.
