Andover's Heikkinen chooses Brown

Brown connection

The town of Andover has sent a slew of great football players to Brown over the years including Bobby, Mark, Paul and Buddy Farnham, Brendan and Neil Finneran, James Perry, Bill O’Brien and Andy Coke.

All-State wide receiver Will Heikkinen will be joining Coke and continuing the tradition. Heikkinen broke several Golden Warrior records this fall when he caught 67 passes for 1,126 yards and 9 TDs.

One More Week

More good news for North Andover boys basketball. Brendan Miller says he expects to be back in a week.

Athlete dying young

Oliver Ames High is still reeling from the death of wrestling captain Devin Ness last Friday. He got sick while dog sitting and later died of a brain aneurysm.

Soccer sensations

Pretty cool that the nation’s top rated high school senior soccer players are midfielders Diego Fagundez of Leominster, Mass., and Morgan Andrews of Milford, N.H. Lydia Simmons of Londonderry is ranked No. 28 in the Class of 2014 by TopDrawerSoccer.com.

Jeepers Creepers

Add to the All-Name team Ole Miss basketball player Cade Peeper.

Think Pink

Friday’s Central Catholic at Methuen girls basketball game will benefit the Relay for Life Coaches vs. Cancer campaign. Players will be wearing pink warm-up shirts and shoelaces to raise awareness for cancer research.

Donations can be sent to: MHS Girls Basketball, 1 Ranger Road, Methuen MA 01844.

Finding religion

There is a fascinating YouTube video of Eagle-Tribune wrestling MVP Zach Bridson from Timberlane. The Tennessee-Chattanooga freshman wrestler speaks of his issues with drugs and alcohol in high school and how finding religion has helped him turn his life around.

Strange night

Junior forward Rebecca Alois, one of the heroes of Andover’s 49-37 win over Central Catholic last week, had a strange boxscore that night. She had a whopping 19 rebounds, 10 on the offensive end, but no points. Usually, offensive rebounds lead directly to points but Alois often passed the ball out to restart the offense.
