While few believed, King always did

Scott King’s story is an unusual one.

He wasn’t that kid who was a blue-chipper seemingly out of the womb. As a matter of fact, he averaged just 3.0 points a game as a junior at Pinkerton in 2008-09, when Zach Mathieu, Ben Proulx and Beau Cassidy were the Astro stars.

He repeated his junior year at Holderness School, continued to work on his game and in the spring of 2010 during AAU ball he blew up.

The New England Recruiting Report said he “came virtually out of nowhere.”

“It shows kids anything is possible with dedication and hard work,” said his proud mother, Lisa King. “From two minutes a game at Pinkerton ... and now SportsCenter! Scott never gave up.”

King said he never wished anyone ill will at Pinkerton. He’s gone on to bigger and better things and the next year Mathieu carried the Astros to their first Division 1 title in 20 years.

“I went to the championship game,” he said. “I don’t regret leaving at all. I was really happy for them.

“Everything happens for a reason. If things were different at Pinkerton, I wouldn’t be at Holderness and then I wouldn’t be here. It wasn’t the right fit for me and Holderness was the perfect fit.”

Few would dare predict a reserve as a junior on a New Hampshire public school team would become a Division 1 scholarship player. One who would (and did) was King himself.

“It was always my dream and goal from Day 1,” he said. “I stuck to it no matter what anybody else said. And I accomplished it.”
