Lemieux sparks Astros to record 18th win

DERRY — On a memorable Senior Night for the Pinkerton wrestling team, it was a sophomore who led the way.

Jean-Luc Lemieux, who has had his ups and downs since moving up three weight classes to 126, was in peak form yesterday as he pinned Salem senior star John Rheaume, who won his weight class at the rugged Methuen Tournament, in the second period to spark Pinkerton to a 48-18 victory.

Lemieux was leading Rheaume 5-0 when he got the pin.

The victory improved Pinkerton’s record to 18-1, which sets a school record for wins in a season, breaking last year’s mark, when the Astros were 17-3. They have two meets left (against Bedford and Campbell) Saturday, both of which they should win handily.

Other big individual wins for Pinkerton came at 120, where Nick Arseneault went into overtime to take a 4-2 decision, and at 220, where Kyle Olson recorded a second-period pin over Dom Gigante. The Astros won 10 of 14 weight classes, including the last four by pin.

Cam Crowell’s pin at heavyweight was his 30th win of the season and impressive freshman 170-pounder Dylan Barreiro picked up his 21st victory.

“We’re pretty much having the kind of season we were hoping to have,” said Pinkerton coach Dave Rhoads. “It was a great win by Jean-Luc and I was impressed with Dakota Kroll. That was a lot closer than the score indicates.”

There were some highlights in defeat for Salem, however. Junior Tyler Siverhus and Jackson Peck, both of whom have been banged up and were questionable starters last night, were victorious over quality opponents in successive matches.

Siverhus decisioned Dakota Krol 7-2 and Peck pinned Brenden Sullivan early in the second period. Also, Cody Sharpe decisioned Tony Messina 14-11 at 170, rallying from an 8-6 deficit after the second period.
