Andover (probably) wins state crown

Manning wins every event as Warriors romp, but judges confer on technicality

---- — BRAINTREE — The Andover boys gymnastics team may or may not have won the state title last night.

Led by senior standout Brian Manning, the Warriors had more than enough points to win the state crown, but they were not officially declared the winner.

“There was a question about our lineup and the officials were reviewing it,” said Andover coach Steve Sirois. “Nothing is official at this point, but it shouldn’t make a difference because of how much we won by.”

Manning finished his terrific high school career with a bang, placing first in every event and easily winning the all-around with a score of 35.0. But he got plenty of help as well, particularly from freshman Joseph Aronov, who placed in every event, coming in second in the high bar and pommel horse, Ivan Igo also placed in two events for the Warriors.

Andover unofficially finished with 164 1/2 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Lowell, which was 14 points back in the seven-team field.

“I’m not sure what the holdup is,” said Sirois shortly before press time. “We should have won the meet.”

Whatever the case, for Andover it was both a magnificent and yet strange way for what may be the final MIAA state meet to end. The MIAA announced last month that it would not sanction boys gymnastics after this year.
