A close finish

Edged out by Nashua North in a tiebreaker, Pinkerton finished second, Londonderry third by a single stroke, and Timberlane placed fourth in a quad meet at Green Meadow Country Club. Medalist honors went to Astros Kyle Dellorusso and Nick Salema as well as Mike Dube of the Owls, all shooting 37s. Chris Ugolini and Bobby Barrett led the Lancers with 38s.

Frahm fires up offense

Sarah Frahm not only did a great job pushing the offense forward, she also contributed a goal and two assists in Salem's season-opening 6-0 victory over Nashua North. "Sarah made a lot of nice things happen," said coach John Gatsas.

Getting his Irish up

NORTH ANDOVER — Greg Herenda had no idea what he was getting involved in, but he was more than willing to give it a shot.
Three years ago, the UMass Lowell head men's basketball coach was recommended by former colleague and UConn men's associate coach George Blaney to travel to Ireland and run a camp to teach middle and high school-aged kids the fundamentals of the game.

Windham's blue-collar sprinter

You don't usually think of track sprinters as guys who train at their specialty year-round.
Often times, they're soccer or football players using track as a way to stay sharp and retain an edge in their sport of choice. Only rarely do you find a top-notch sprinter with a singular focus on track.

Ortiz, Sox avoid hearing, agree to one-year deal

BOSTON — David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox avoided salary arbitration by agreeing yesterday to a one-year contract worth $14,575,000.
The deal for the slugging designated hitter was midway between the $16.5 million he asked for last month and the $12.65 million submitted by the Red Sox, which matched his 2011 earnings.
