103 MPH!
Hanigan and the phenom
With all due respect to Andover High's 1999 aces Mark Rocca and Kevin Shepard, it's safe to say their old batterymate, the Cincinnati Reds' Ryan Hanigan, has never caught anybody quite like Aroldis Chapman. Heck, nobody has.
Wednesday Hanigan caught the Cuban defector when he twice hit an outrageous 103 mph on the radar gun in his MLB debut. No word yet on how long Hanigan soaked his hand in ice afterward. He was fine the next night as he belted a towering three-run, pinch-hit homer to help give Chapman his first win.

California Dreaming
Two-sports St. John's of Shrewsbury star Richard Rodgers, who played vs. Central Catholic in the Division 1 state hoop final, committed to Cal football. The tight end is following in the footsteps of his father. Holy Cross assistant Richard Sr. was a two-time second-team All-Pac 10 player for the Golden Bears. He twice touched the ball on the historic "the band is on the field!" play to beat Stanford and John Elway in 1982.
The Face of UNC
Donald Shaun Black must now wish he weren't such a big North Carolina fan. A "UNC" tattoo on his right cheek was used in the description a man gave police after being robbed during a drug deal.
Holy Roller
Add to the All-Name Team Georgetown (Ky.) College golfer Christian Heavens. ... In recruiting news, Merrimack star Wayne Mack's brother, Myles, one of the top point guards in the country, has signed with Rutgers. He plays for famed St. Anthony's of Jersey City.
Child abuse
An indication of how out of control youth sports has become — One Southern N.H. 12-year-old caught a whopping 24 innings in one day this summer.
