Fisher Cats salvage a split with Reading Phillies

READING, Pa. — Adam Loewen doubled home two runs in the top of the tenth inning to give the Fisher Cats a 3-1 win over Reading and a split of yesterday’s day-night doubleheader with the Fightin Phils at First Energy Stadium.

With the win, and Trenton’s 4-2 loss to Portland, the Fisher Cats trail the second place Thunder by three games in the standings. New Hampshire has nine games left to pass the Thunder and earn a playoff berth.

In the top of the tenth inning, Kenny Wilson reached on a hit-by-pitch and Lance Zawadzki walked. Loewen’s two-out double off the left field wall scored both runners to give New Hampshire the win. Three Fisher Cats relievers combined to toss five scoreless innings in relief of Casey Lawrence, who was making his first Double-A start of the season.

Ryan Tepera (10-8) worked the bottom of the eighth and ninth to earn the win.

New Hampshire (65-67) scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning.

Earlier in the day, the Fightin Phils scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 4-2 win.

Tyson Brummett (1-6) went the distance in the loss, allowing four hits and four runs.

The Fisher Cats return home for the final four home games tomorrow against the future Red Sox, the Portland Sea Dogs.

Spinners stumble

Shaky relief pitching and three errors proved costly to the Lowell Spinners last night in a 7-4 loss at Hudson Valley.

The Spinners led 1-0 after five innings, but Hudson scored three times in the sixth and four in the seventh to take command.

Manuel Margot was 2 for 5 for the Spinners (35-27) and starter Teddy Stankiewicz threw three scoreless innings.
