HAVERHILL — In 32 years of umpiring softball, Kevin Woelfel has done games at all levels.
But, he probably enjoys the Over-45 League in Haverhill as much as any of them.
“There’s always a lot of talk going on, the guys want to be out there and they’re enjoying it,” said Woelfel, the legendary former girls basketball coach for Haverhill High. “It’s a good outlet for them and (as an umpire), there’s very little arguing. It’s fun and I enjoy it.”
Woelfel, who retired from teaching three years ago but still works for the school district among several part-time jobs, has certainly noticed the enthusiasm of 76-year-old Ron Sarofian.
“He (Sarofian) is still competitive,” said Woelfel. “I’ve seen a number of times where he’s gone 3 for 3 or even 4 for 4. And he wants to play all the time. You can tell.”
Of course, Woelfel has long since been eligible to play in the Over-45 league, but his preference is to stick with umpiring.
“As long as I enjoy it, I’ll keep doing it,” he said. — Dave Dyer
