Carp's pinch single leads Sox to win

Red Sox 4, Orioles 3

Star of the Game: Mike Carp delivered a pinch hit RBI bloop single to put Boston ahead 4-3 in the eighth inning. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who hit his team-leading 35 double earlier that inning, scored.

No. 2 Star: Dustin Pedroia had a huge two-out, two-run single in the seventh to tie it 3-3. Pedroia was 1 for 2 with two walks. Pedroia has 27 RBIs this year that have either tied the game or put Boston ahead.

AL East Standings: The Tampa Bay Rays won so the Red Sox maintain a 2.5 game lead for first place. The Sox increased their lead to 7.5 games over the O’s and 8.5 games over New York, which lost to Toronto.

Ellsbury Exits: Jacoby Ellsbury fouled a ball off his right foot in the seventh. Ellsbury remained in the game, singled, stole second and scored on Pedroia’s single. He then left the game for a defensive replacement in the eighth. The scan came back negative and Ellsbury said he plans to play today.

Stealing the Show: Ellsbury stole his 48 and 49 bases and has been caught just four times. That’s a 92.5 percent success rate.

Lackey’s Line: Red Sox starter John Lackey again pitched well. He went 7.1 innings, allowing three runs, all earned, on seven hits (two solo homers) and one walk while striking out four. Lackey leads with the Sox with 17 quality starts.

Today’s matchup: Baltimore RHP Chris Tillman (14-4, 3.66) vs. Boston LHP Jon Lester (12-7, 3.97), 7:10 p.m.
