Around the Horn: Jess Cote, Pinkerton field hockey

Michael Muldoon

---- — Jess Cote is an All-Star, a leader and a champion in two sports.

The Pinkerton Academy senior won Division 1 state titles in field hockey and lacrosse last year. She’s captain-elect in the former and was a junior captain in the latter.

Cote was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star in both sports.

The lacrosse defender and field hockey center-midfielder would love to earn two more titles before heading to college.

Astro field hockey coach Jen Resmini said, “She plays 110 percent every practice, every scrimmage. She’s the ultimate leader and a perfect captain.”

The National Honor Society student spoke about being recruited, her passion for cooking and her love of the Patriots in this week’s Around the Horn.

Are you working? “No, I’m too busy with sports (lacrosse and field hockey). Tourneys and camps and lot of recruiting stuff, visiting schools.”

Who have you visited? “Bentley and UMass Lowell are my top two.”

For which sport? “Lacrosse. I love both just as much. If I could play both I’d play both. But it just ended up being lacrosse.”

What’s your favorite personal athletic achievement? “Winning two championships in one year was pretty sweet.”

Which was bigger? “Both games were awesome. Field hockey was my first champ so that obviously was huge. But it was the first championship in a couple years (2004) for lacrosse, too.”

How are you doing academically? “Academics are very important. They always come first before sports. My class rank I think is in the top 100 out of 700 students.”

What’s been the lowest point of your career? “I had some mental struggles. I lost a lot of confidence and had to overcome that, more in lacrosse.”

Is it true you played every minute of every game last fall in field hockey? “I’m pretty sure I never came out. I don’t remember so I probably didn’t.”

What’s something people don’t know about you? “I love to cook. I cooked at the school’s Astro Cafe. Chicken parm and stuff like that. It’s just a hobby.”

What’s your specialty? “I love to bake pastries. Cakes and stuff and decorating them. I did a cake for a class. It was three tiers and took nine hours. It was crazy. I was very proud.”

Are you from an athletic family? “Brother (Cam) played football and lacrosse at Pinkerton. My dad (Tom Cote) played football, basketball and baseball at Timberlane.”

What’s your dream job? “Corporate planning. Anything in the business field.”

Who’s your dream date? “Rob Gronkowski. I love him.”

What is your pet peeve? “When people keep their directional on even when they aren’t turning.”

Do you have any pets? “A dog named Brady. Big Patriots fans over here! It’s a black Cocker Spaniel.”

What town are you from? “Hampstead.”

What is the most embarrassing song you have in your iPod? “A lot of Disney tunes. ‘Go the Distance’ by Hercules.”

If you were named principal, what’s the first thing you’d do? “I’d make the pep rally not only in the fall but also in the spring.”
