Sports in a Minute: Andover's Rivet doing big things at Springfield

renaissance man

Former Andover High three-sport athlete Colin Rivet is doing big things at Springfield College. A pre-med student entering his junior year, he’s observed major surgeries at Mass. General, has been working as an EMT and boasts a 3.94 GPA. That includes a 4.0 last semester.

He’s team manager for the volleyball team, which has won back-to-back Division 3 national titles.

“He’s a huge part of our success,” said coach Charlie Sullivan. “Colin assists in managing drills in practice, completing statistical analysis in practice and competitions, hosting recruits, game management and whatever else comes up.”

Marsh ringers

Warning to the students at the Marsh Grammar School in Methuen, if you have a faculty-student touch football game, you might be in big trouble. New principal Stephen Sierpina was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star receiver for Central Catholic in 1995 and new dean of students Brendon Parker was a lineman at Haverhill and UMaine.

headline of the week

“Black Bears gifted with sacks of Cole.”

That was the clever Portland Press Herald headline on a feature on UMaine pass rushing whiz Michael Cole.

Foul mood

Chicago Bulls second-round pick Erik Murphy had a disastrous opening game in the Las Vegas Summer League. The 6-10 forward racked up a whopping 10 fouls in under 19 minutes of play and missed all six of his 3-point tries. In another game, he broke his nose.

It turned out, though, he played very well overall, averaging 11.6 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting .548 from the floor and .500 on 3-pointers.

R.I.P. Warren

Warren Cormier, who died of a heart attack last week, had a smile which could light up a room. And nothing made him smile more than watching his daughter, promising Andover High junior Rachael Cormier, play AAU basketball or for the Golden Warriors.
