Bard designated for assignment

---- — BARD DESIGNATED

Daniel Bard’s Red Sox career likely is finished.

Bard was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for outfielder Quintin Berry.

The once dominant right-hander has dealt with control issues since Sept. 2011. He walked four batters over a 1.0 inning appearance for the Lowell Spinners on Saturday.

He surrendered six walks over 1.2 innings for the Gulf Coast Red Sox last week.

“Given what he’s been able to do in the past, and obviously dealing with the struggles of consistency that are there, unfortunately he’s in the position he’s in,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

Bard likely will be claimed off waivers by another team. He must clear waivers for the Red Sox to be able to keep him and option him to the minors.

“We haven’t turned our back on him, yet we needed a roster spot,” Farrell said.

Farrell reflected how over a two-year period in the majors, Bard was dominant.

“The weapon he emerged as and the way Tito (Terry Francona) had the flexibility in that seventh, eighth inning, in many ways he had the tougher inning more so than the closer many, many nights,” Farrell said. “To have that kind of power and ease in which he threw and that breaking ball in addition to 98 to 101 (mph) or whatever it was, yeah, for two years he was as good as there was in the game.”
