Local women's softball team headed to nationals in Orlando

By Bill Burt

---- — It started several months ago when a few local women, competing in the Haverhill Co-Ed Slo-Pitch softball league realized something.

“We realized that if we put a team together of women, we’d be pretty good,” said Tama Spencer, a former Haverhill High star who graduated in 2004.

Well, they’ve been better than “pretty good.” In fact, better than good. Spencer and her team, the Bombshell Bombers, are ranked No. 1 in the ASA “D” Division and they leave in a few days for ASA Nationals in Orlando.

A week later, Bombshell Bombers will be off for Oklahoma City for the ASA Worlds.

Not bad for a whim.

“It’s really been an incredible run,” said Spencer, whose team finished 5-0 and allowed only six runs at a national tournament in Columbus, Ohio a few weeks ago, thus earning the No. 1 ranking.

“A lot of us know each other from high school, playing with and against each other,” said Spencer.

The Bombshell Bombers range in age from 22 to 38, with former players from Haverhill High, Lawrence High and Central Catholic.

Spencer, a right fielder, has been joined by Who’s Who list of former high school all-stars: Trisha Aubin (Lawrence, ‘04), Brittney Kannan (Central, ‘04), Katy Cotter (graduated from Alvirne but resides in Haverhill) and the Arrajj sisters from Lawrence, Tricia (‘00) and Jen (‘95), who is the starting shortstop.

Spencer said their team is looking for a sponsor, to help defray costs of the their successful (and expensive) softball tournament season.

“We could use a little help financially,” said Spencer. “We have been doing a little fund-raising. It’s been a lot of fun. I can’t tell you how fun it’s been.

The team is coached by Erica Martin.
