Welch wins series

Haverhill’s Jefferson Welch captured the overall title in the 2013 Good Times Summer Road Race Series. Welch finished first in half of the 10-race series and came in second in the final race, the Last Call 5K, running a personal-best 16:21, less than three seconds behind Scott Boiko of Chelmsford.

Muddas fall short

At the annual Mt. Washington Valley Mud Bowl in North Conway, the local entry “Muddas” finished with a 3-2 record, losing two close games to arch-rival Gumby’s.

Much of the Muddas, who have won the title 18 times since 1980, are former Timberlane standouts, including veteran quarterback Jay Holder and receivers Jon Nye, Pat Connolly and Dan Woodworth. Other former Owls on the team include Ryan Holder, Taylor Smith, Jason Bretton and Chris Tardif.

The North Country Crocs came in first, beating Gumby’s 14-0 in the championship game.

“But we wore down Gumby’s,” said Holder. “We should have won this year.”

Different strokes for ...

The Goffstown and Londonderry offenses offer a contrast in styles, and each style was effective Saturday.

Goffstown’s spread and Londonderry’s single wing produced 70 points, with Londonderry coming out on top, 36-34, in Goffstown.

While the spread has become a trendy offense in New Hampshire high school football and elsewhere, Division I teams won’t see the single wing this season unless they play Londonderry.

Londonderry churned out an even 500 yards of offense in the victory, 356 of which came on the ground. Goffstown had 338 yards of total offense, and most of that came through the air. Goffstown quarterback Casey Gervais completed 19 of 33 passes for 237 yards and three TDs.

O’Donnell stars in debut

Former Methuen standout Mike O’Donnell had a sensational cross country debut for the University of Connecticut over the weekend. Competing in the UMass Invitational, O’Donnell took second overall in 19:22 over the 6,200-meter course. He was one of four Huskies in the top 15 as UConn took the team championship.
