Star of the Game: Danny Valencia stroked a leadoff triple in the ninth inning against Koji Uehara and pinch runner Alexi Casilla scored on Matt Wieters’ sacrifice fly. Valencia was the first batter to get a hit against Uehara since Aug. 17.

Uehara’s Streak Ends: Koji Uehara, who suffered his first loss this season, entered the game having retired 37 consecutive batters. He also entered having not surrendered a run in 27 straight outings and 30.1 innings.

Magic Number: The Red Sox’ magic number is down to 3 to win the AL East because the Rays lost.

Dreadful Offense: The Red Sox offense was able to muster just three hits. Dustin Pedroia homered to lead off the bottom of the first. Mike Carp doubled in the second and Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled in the ninth. That was all.

Dempster’s Line: Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out five.

Today’s Matchup: Jake Peavy (11-5, 4.03) vs. LHP Wei-Yin Chen (7-7, 3.99), 7:10 p.m.
