Chasing a legend

With 93 points (41 goals, 52 assists) heading into his senior season, Merrimack College star Mike Collins is on pace to record the most career points for a Warrior since 1998, according to The Eagle-Tribune Mike McMahon.

Whose mark is he chasing?

None other than former Pinkerton Academy hockey coach Casey Kesselring. Before coaching the Astros to their first two state hockey titles in program history (2009, 2012), Kesselring scored 133 points during his career at Merrimack College. He graduated in 1998. Kesselring recently stepped down from his job at Pinkerton to become head coach at hockey powerhouse New Hampton School.

Tackle by Griffin

Houston Texans backup tight end Ryan Griffin of Londonderry has not yet made a catch in the NFL, but he did register his first professional stat on Sunday. The rookie made a special teams tackle in the Texans’ loss to Baltimore on Sunday.

Griffin now has exactly two tackles fewer than Houston safety and former NFL defensive Player of the Year Ed Reed has made this season.

Pens’ pest

North Andover’s Bobby Farnham was demoted by the Pittsburgh Penguins to their AHL affiliate the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

But not before Farnham had a glowing feature written about him in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette. The story referred to him as, among other things, “fearless” and the next coming of famous NHL badboy Claude Lemieux, and called for him to make the Pens’ roster.

“They will tell you that Farnham is 70 inches and 180 pounds of incessant irritation, as enjoyable to have around for opponents as a pebble in the skate. Which is pretty much exactly what Farnham has in mind,” wrote Post-Gazzette columnist Dave Molinari.

Farnham shines

Speaking of the Farnhams, Andover’s Cam Farnham has emerged as Endicott College’s top kick returner in his freshman season. The 5-foot-6, 150-pounder has returned six kicks for 196 yards (32.7 average), including a 93-yarder in the opener.
